Grade 8

NEW TERM

Bonjour les Parents!

We are ready to begin a new unit in Grade 8 French class. This is the second play in the series of plays for the program. Having completed the first kit in the series, your daughter/son should be well aware of the
activities and strategies used in the program to develop language skills, and should be well on her/his way to gaining a sense of confidence and competence in the language. The play for this second kit is an original story written by Wendy Maxwell, entitled Veux-tu danser ?

The focus of this unit is to develop strong communicative skills through kinesthetic activities and to provide an integrated drama-based approach, systematically designed for students at each grade level. Both oral and written communication skills are emphasized, so that appropriate exposure to the written word and opportunities to develop reading and writing and listening skills occur throughout the program.

In order to do well in French, your daughter/son will:

• participate in all oral and written language activities
with enthusiasm;

• learn the words introduced in class;

• perform the play, choreograph and perform a dance for an
audience;

• work cooperatively in small-group play rehearsals and
many other partner activities;

• contribute to class-created and peer-created works;

• keep corrections up to date;

• complete work on time, both in-class work, homework and
preparation for tests;

• stay focused and productive in class;

• demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of spontaneous
and structured interactions;

• seek help when needed;

• use the language creatively with increasing correctness
in spontaneous speech;

• apply her/his knowledge of correct grammar and spelling
in creative writing,

   games and
spontaneous language in whole-class, small-group and partner activities;

• develop spontaneous fluency through daily interactions in
French with peers

   and teacher.

Scene 1: September- October

Bonjour!

The Grade 8 class is fantastic. They are creative and very enthusiastic about French. So far in this class we have become very familiar with our unit play Salut mon ami!. Students have done some language activities and games based on the play. We have introduced the unit song, and reviewed some grammatical concepts. Furthermore, in this class, we have begun a weekly journal writing activity. We have also been learning a Christian worship song in French, Ton Nom– by Paul Baloche, as well as Bible verses in French.

Next Act: We will prepare to present our play in small groups to the students in Grade 1-4. We will continue to do play based language activities, journal writing, and grammar lessons.

Homework Tip: Encourage your child to read in French at home. Help your child with any French homework they have.
